Carrot with Character

January 13, 2010

Over the summer, at my favorite place in the world–San Francisco’s Ferry Building Farmer’s Market– I ate sassy food.

Sassy, indeed.

While on the topic of this past summer, I’d like to showcase one of my most favorite breakfasts that I enjoyed  frequently while in SF. I was experiencing withdrawals last night, and dreamed about planned on recreating the breakfast that brings me back to the best summer of my life.

Ezekiel Original Sprouted Grain Cereal, Trader Joe’s Raw Creamy Unsalted Almond Butter, Apricots, Banana, and a photo-shy carton of soymilk.

The perfect breakfast, in my eyes. I find it to be the most nutritious, satisfying, and delicious combination in my breakfast book. The nutty, crunchy gloriousness of the cereal is the absolute perfect addition to the creamy banana, sweet yet bitter apricots, and the divinity that is raw almond butter. I first purchased this cereal at the greatest little grocery store in Haight Ashbury when I stepped in to pick up some apricots. And this morning, when I took the first bite, I was transported back to the refrigerator room of my dorm, staring out the window at the swiftly moving sky.

I was always the first girl up. 7:00 am. I’d jump off the bunk bed (I got top), throw on my running clothes, grab a handful of trail mix, brush my teeth and sprint past the doorman out into the awakening city. I’d go for a jog down Sutter Street, up Octavia (and I really mean UP, twas a very steep hill!), and through Lafayette park. On sunny mornings, I’d stop and sit on a bench facing the bay & gaze at the Golden Gate bridge. On foggy ones, I’d sit at a bench on the other side, watching people walk their dogs. And I’d just sit.  For about 20 minutes, I felt like the city was embedded within my being. I’d smile, get up, and run back home. I will forever refer back to those Summer mornings as the most blissful moments of my life.

They may seem trivial, but my mornings in San Francisco will forever be with me. They will be my ‘happy place’.

What’s the once place in the world where you have achieved pure tranquility?

What meal/food automatically transports you to a place of your past?

And now, I digress

Today’s lunch:

Spinach salad with carrots, cucumber, sprouts, amazing hummus, and garden veggie tempeh… topped with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

After School snack:

The best grapefruit I’ve ever had.

and some of this-

Truly sensational. Because I am growing fonder and fonder of fantastic tasting food, I dub these Kaia Sweet Curry Sunflower Seeds as the most delicious snack ever. For today, I at least.

Today, in regards to food, has been perfect.  And it’s only going to get better!

It’s my mom’s birthday today, and I’m making a special pizza & salad supper 🙂

Stay tuned….

Oh! and make sure you check out Maggie’s giveaway !

San fran was where I first tasted a caprese salad and the best clam chower of my life, before I was vegetarian…but I have to say when I go to the islands thats the best food ever. I remember getting an apple/ginger/pineapple juice every morning and having a bowl of ezekiel cereal..such fond memories. Thanks for reminding me how much I need to go buy some of that cereal again!

I can’t think of any places where I was able to achieve absolute tranquility.. and that, is truly disappointing. Obviously there have been the rare, random moments where I feel it for a second, but there is no set location. Yet. 🙂

Mmm, yummy looking cereal bowl. Is that cereal almost raw? I know it’s sprouted, but I don’t know the cooking temps.

Is that sprouted cereal? SPROUTED CEREAL? 😦 Dang nabbit. Why don’t they have that kind of stuff in Aus?

San Fransisco sounds so great! What a great opportunity that must have been… To be able to travel and study your passion… I’ve moved around alot, and haven’t really been able to find my “place of tranquility…” Someday…

As always, your eats look amazing (especially the salad)! And have left me totally jealous…
